DISCOGRAPHY:
My musical research and my personal search have been one and the same thing.
A movement in unison. Every album released expresses a piece of that journey.
1995. URGENTE, Magma trio, with Luigi Mosso at the acoustic bass and Mirko Sabatini at drums. There’s the expressive pressure of a first recording attempt.
It has the impulse of one who wants to come out, yet who knows he still needs polish. It’s a CD that frees energy built up through years of study and struggle. There’s a new name trying to emerge with a decisive gesture of creative research.
1998. IN MEDITATION, 1998, which I made under the name Sw. Deva Sangitam. Another chapter, another planet. In URGENTE I was trying to make my mark by working on forms, if for nothing else to mix them up; with IN MEDITATION self-affirmation and form are abandoned. There’s no time, and when there is, it’s slow and not “held”. IN MEDITATION is the result of three years of inner wandering, when music was my meditation, in the true sense of the word. My meditation involved sitting with my legs crossed and my eyes closed, and a bit later blowing on my instrument. I had no purpose at all, except to emit a sound.
2003. A MUSICAL JOURNEY - A tranquil day at lake como. Featured Andrea Rapisarda at piano and keyboards. This work marks a critical passage. I started it before the passage and finished it afterward. It’s dedicated to the places where I grew up, where I came from and where I returned at that moment. The search ended, there was acceptance, wonder and thanks. There’s harmony, melody. Form and time return, though they still... oscillate.
2008. ASTROLABIOANIMA. With Giovani Sollima at violoncello. 1998. It’s the lived-in present. There is no longer the urge to speak, no longer the need to withdraw, there is an extraordinary encounter. A direct, free musical dialogue, without formulas, without methods, beyond forms and non-forms.
Press: The astrolabe is Greek and means "the catcher of stars" and is the oldest instrument for navigating the sea. This fine Italian duo recorded this gem at home in Alessandro's house. There is something earthy and just right about this duo. Giovanni uses his voice on occasion just to punctuate with odd sounds. The fragmented melodies are often charming and memorable. The melodies seem to come from folk tunes and had me humming along instantly. The combination of cello and soprano sax sounds perfect on this disc as the blend is consistently warm and enchanting. For me, this is magic music, music to bathe in and forget about the trials and tribulations, the confusion and stress of everyday life. It feels like the sunshine coming through the clouds on an overcast day. No I say more? I think not." - BLG
